Designed and managed by an outstanding team of educational technology experts, GradeMaker aims to provide intelligent services and products to exam boards globally – to help them deliver valid and reliable assessment.

GradeMaker was established in 2013, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Stephen Austin Group. Stephen Austin has been a trusted partner to the examination sector around the world for 60 years.

The team

Rory Fowler

Rory is Chairman of the GradeMaker business, and Managing Director of the Stephen Austin Group (GradeMaker’s parent company).

The Stephen Austin Group has had over 60 years of continuous service to the sector and is now one of the longest established service providers to examination bodies globally. Stephen Austin is committed to supporting assessment providers and believes strongly in the importance of delivering value to its customers.

David Haggie

David is Managing Director of the GradeMaker business. He has worked in educational technology for 15 years. He was previously Head of Strategy at GL Assessment (a formative testing company), Business Development Director at Nelson Thornes (an educational publisher) and a Director at RM Education.

Over 9 years at RM David initiated and led the creation of the RM Assessment division, and amongst other achievements led the development of RM’s e-marking solution which is now a world leader and is used annually to score over 100 million pages of exam content.

Jim Allen

Jim is CTO and leads the technical design and development of the GradeMaker technology. He is a highly experienced technologist having worked as IT Director and technical lead on a wide variety of major projects.

Among his many achievements Jim was the Enterprise Architect for the three largest on-line educational systems in the UK including Glow, the national Scottish educational intranet, which has around 1.5 million users, the South West Grid for Learning Merlin Managed Learning Environment designed to scale to 1.6 million users and for a Learning Platform, developed using Microsoft SharePoint, offered as a product to schools and Local Authorities, and which had around 3.5 million accounts. His experience extends from development architecture and management, infrastructure design, data systems to business systems integration.
